Yesterday, Tisch's Kanbar Institute of Film and Television announced the creation of a new contest to encourage recent graduates to develop a narrative or documentary feature film with an urban, hip-hop theme.

The Alumni Def Filmmaker Award, which is open to recent graduates from Kanbar, provides funding of up to $300,000 for a feature film and $150,000 for a documentary.

The award was announced by Kanbar in conjunction with Simmons Lathan Media Group, a leading producer and distributor of urban and hip-hop themed media.

'While Kanbar filmmakers are some of the best emerging talents anywhere, making the transition from student to professional filmmaker is a difficult one,' Tisch dean Mary Schmidt Campbell said in a statement. 'The early financial assistance provided by this award will make building a filmmaking career considerably easier.'
