The Islamic Center, the Islamic Law Students Association and the South Asian Law Students Association have announced fund-raisers and events to provide relief to the areas affected by Saturday's earthquake in South Asia that killed more than 40,000 people, according to Reuters.
The Islamic Center is holding an emergency clothing drive, and is asking for sweaters, blankets, comforters, long sleeve shirts, pants and hijabs. The clothing can be of any size, for any age, new or used. Donors should neatly fold and pack the clothing, labeling the outside with the exact contents of the donations. Packages can be dropped off at the Islamic Center located at the basement level of the Thompson Center at 238 Thompson St. between West 3rd Street and Washington Square South. Donations will be accepted until 6 p.m. on Thursday.
ILSA and SALSA have set up a fund-raising table at the Golding Lounge in Vanderbilt Hall and will be present to accept donations every day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Thursday.
The earthquake hit parts of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, with Kashmir being the region hardest hit. Relief efforts have been slowed by heavy rain. The death toll has risen considerably since Saturday, and officials said there are still certain regions with which no contact has been made, making it difficult to accurately estimate the casualty and disaster level.
