After fire broke out at a 5th Avenue deli, two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The former Cafeteria 61building on 13th Street and Fifth Avenue burned down last night, injuring two firefighters in the blaze.

The building was under "heavy fire conditions on arrival" at around 11:30 p.m., Sixth Battalion Chief Edward Bergamini said. He said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 45 minutes.

The deli, which was popular with NYU students, closed about a month ago.

The exterior was charred but much of the interior was still intact.

"I live next door. I was not here when the fire was here but it will smell of burning wood very much," Waheed Abdul, 36, said.

About 30 minutes after the fired was subdued, a group of NYU students gathered close to the police line, enamored by the charred building.

CAS freshman Edwin White, who frequented the deli while it was still open, simply said, "Damn."
