HOSPITAL HALLOWEEN | Wilbur, a patient at Beth Israel, plays with a parachute man as PIKE junior Frederico Ribiero looks on.

NYU's largest fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, visited the children of Beth Israel Medical Center yesterday to read Halloween stories and hand out goody bags in order to give the hospital's young patients a proper Halloween experience.

Pi Kappa Alpha president David Rothman said the fraternity just wanted to give back to the community.

"We thought it would be a great experience for the children and for the brothers," he said.

Hospital employee Mary Ann Williams said that a lot of the children in the hospital are there for long periods of time. The volunteers are a big help to the staff and bring a lot of joy to the children, she said.

Eleven-year-old patient Natasha Johnson said she loved the goody bags the fraternity brothers gave her.

"They gave me candy, funny glasses and a pen, and they said 'hi' really nicely," she said. "When I show my mom these glasses, she's going to laugh up a storm!"

One of the nurses, Sara Kaplan, said that special visits like these really break up the monotony of the day for the kids.

"It is good for them to see someone other than a medical person," she said.

The excitement seemed to be mutual, as the fraternity members said they enjoyed the experience as much as the small patients they were visiting.

"I feel good," said fraternity member Roman Rozenfeld. "It's always really great to help people. It's something a lot of us feel is important and we try to do it as much as possible."

That was very nice of the "brothers" to visit the hospital. Frat boys usually have the reputation of being party-goers, jocks, pranksters, troublemakers, (a la the film "Animal House") etc. (Continued…)

I'm in another fraternity at NYU. Thanks PIKE, for helping The Greek Community's image.

Mame, I have an idea:

Instead of feigning appreciation through your belittling comments regarding the "reputation" of "Frat boys" you

a) go do some community service of your own,
b) offer genuine thanks without the sideways remarks,
c) start a discussion about how all "Frat boys" are bad, given your extensive knowledge of the subject through critical study of the film "Animal House", or
d) just don't say anything at all. (Continued…)

Fabulous. I think it is so great that these young men took time to do something so important to so many. Yes it is great for the frat image but looking beyond that look at the caracter of these men. (Continued…)
