HOW TO GET HELP
NYU offers services for struggling students or those who are concerned about friends. The Wellness Exchange is available at all times at 212.443.9999 or wellness.exchange@nyu.edu. In an apparent suicide, a CAS sophomore was found dead in his room at Water Street residence hall late Friday night, according to university officials.
The Community Development Educator at Water Street told residents on the student's floor about the death Saturday.
University spokesman John Beckman said the student's parents requested privacy and asked that the university not send out an e-mail to the entire community.
"The family has asked that they be accorded the utmost privacy, and the university will do its best to honor its wishes and urges the media to do the same," he said.
This weekend's incident is the second suicide in an NYU dorm this semester.
In September, NYU freshman Allan Oakley Hunter III died after jumping off the roof of University residence hall. In the 2003-04 school year, there were a rash of suicides at NYU, with five students jumping to their deaths - three in the course of five weeks. A sixth student committed suicide in September 2004.
Beckman said the university provided on-site counselors throughout the weekend.
"The residents of Water Street are naturally saddened but appear to be coping well," he said. "Obviously this is a sorrowful event, and our hearts go out to this young man's family and loved ones."
