NYU's 25-year plan calls for as much as half of the university's expansion to come away from its Washington Square Campus in three "remote locations" - on Governors Island, in downtown Brooklyn or in midtown Manhattan, university officials told WSN today.
NYU is announcing new details of its plan at an open house tonight. The plan, which calls for the university to expand by 6 million square feet by 2031, had been criticized by Greenwich Village community groups for the amount of space NYU plans to acquire.
But planning documents from the open house show that between 2.4 million and 3.2 million square feet of that space would come from outside of the Village. Governors Island and downtown Brooklyn could provide as much 1 million square feet each, officials said.
That would include academic and residential space, and undergraduate students in some departments might have to commute between the main campus and the remote locations, officials said.
Located off the southern tip of Manhattan, Governors Island is a 172-acre island previously inhabited by the U.S. Coast Guard. Recently, the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation moved to redevelop the island, selecting a team of five redesign firms, including SMWM, the architectural firm heading the NYU 2031 expansion plan. GIPEC's plan includes opening up a portion of the island for educational development.
While NYU has not yet acquired the rights to develop on the island, it has been speaking to GIPEC representatives about the possibility for more than a year, officials said, with serious discussions beginning last May.

Midtown sounds like Sexton purchasing property (at inflated prices) from some more board member cronies. He has done this so often he immediately draws suspicion. (Continued…)
